Why a kaleidoscope is the hope we need Right Now

A blurry kaleidoscope image

When was the last time you looked through a kaleidoscope?

If it’s been a while, here’s a quick reminder: At first glance, the image appears fragmented—almost chaotic. But as you slowly twist the lens, something beautiful begins to emerge. The chaos rearranges itself into a new, intricate pattern.

A kaleidoscope is a simple toy, but it is also a powerful metaphor that promises exactly the kind of hope we need right now.

Right now, many of us are feeling the weight of uncertainty. The news can be exhausting. The future feels unclear. It’s easy to look at the current moment and see only disarray.

But what if we’re still mid-turn?

The kaleidoscope reminds us that beauty can still emerge from brokenness. Sometimes, we just need someone to encourage us to keep twisting. To hang in there long enough for the new pattern to reveal itself.

That’s why we’re inviting you to our Family Reunion Fundraiser on April 29th.

For decades, we’ve believed in the power of social health—the idea that human connection is just as vital as mental or physical well-being. Long before the term had a name, Father Berg intuitively knew how critical it was for people to feel seen, valued, and part of something bigger.

Today, that truth is more visible than ever. People are yearning for belonging—a hunger for kindship and places where they hear, “You matter.” And that’s exactly what we’re building through our programs:

  • At Macdonald Residence Assisted Living, Portlanders coming from long-term homelessness and experiencing mental or behavioral challenges are finding not just housing and healthcare but a place where they feel at home.
  • Our Neighborhood Programs is creating spaces and opportunities where belonging can grow for Portlanders often excluded due to mental illness or financial poverty stigma.

Our Family Reunion isn’t just a fundraiser.

It’s a gathering of people who believe in Portland, in kinship, and in the power of showing up for one another. It’s a moment to celebrate, share stories, and invest in a future where everyone belongs.

We may not be able to change the entire political landscape. But we can shape our own corner of it here in Portland—with compassion and courage. And we want you to be part of it. Let’s see what beauty we can create—together.
