Affordable Apartments

A place where you are known

At our affordable apartments in Old Town, housing becomes a platform for belonging. On-site staff work to prevent eviction and connect residents to resources, but they don’t stop there. From day one, they welcome residents into the broader Maybelle community, where people are known by name. Because a stable address should be the beginning of belonging, not the end of the story.

Macdonald West (MacWest) has been home to adults in downtown Portland since 2012, when Maybelle Center purchased the historic West Hotel to preserve scarce affordable housing in the neighborhood and ensure it came with real support services.

More than a place to live.

What makes MacWest different from a typical affordable housing arrangement is what happens after move-in.

Our on-site Residence Service Coordinator works one-on-one with Residents to address gaps in healthcare, housing, technology, and other resources – through informal daily interactions, direct advocacy, and Maybelle’s relationships with local service providers.

The role moves between coaching, cheering on, and celebrating Residents as they navigate uncertain and challenging times. It is this sustained, relational presence, not just the apartment, that makes MacWest a platform for belonging.

Stable housing where belonging begins.

MacWest Residents have full access to Maybelle Center’s Neighborhood Programs as Members. Stable housing creates the conditions for belonging to grow, and belonging makes stable housing more sustainable. The two reinforce each other by design.

Affordable housing is a platform for belonging, not just a place to sleep.
