Some people find their calling in unexpected places—like the pages of a book.
For Judy and Paul, it was reading Radical Compassion that sparked a deep desire to do more for their community. “We realized we couldn’t just watch suffering and injustice and not act.” This growing conviction marked the beginning of a meaningful volunteer journey that has now spanned several years with Maybelle Center.
As visitor volunteers, Judy and Paul have formed deep connections with many individuals, each with their own story. “One man we visited was funny and compassionate, another was incredibly loving and inspirational,” they recount. They’ve also walked with others through difficult transitions, not only for our Members, but for themselves. Some of the people they’ve visited for years have eventually decided to move on and close this chapter in their lives-and it’s not always easy to say goodbye.
But through it all, they’ve always known the human connection is worthwhile, for everyone involved.
Their advice to someone considering volunteering?
“Take all the training, do your homework, and remain dedicated—even when it’s hard. The rewards outweigh the challenges.”
