Meet Valerie and James

Have you met our development dynamos yet? Even amidst an uncertain social climate, the values and insights powering our fundraising team give Maybelle Center an edge.

If you’ve ever wondered who might be capable of joining as the head of a team the literal day before a massive event and still finding a way to meaningfully contribute, look no further than our brand new Development Director, Valerie!

When not working, Valerie enjoys skiing, rock climbing, and spending time with her two children, Sophia and Zach.

Valerie (she/her) hit the ground running, joining Maybelle Center this Spring right before our annual fundraiser and immediately making herself an invaluable and supportive leader. Her passion for inclusion and her fundamental belief that bringing people and resources together can change the world was palpable. This belief infects everything she does—and we are so glad to have her leading our fundraising department.

Outside of work, James takes road trips to sample new bakeries, volunteers with Portland Community Gardens, and plays D&D with their partner and their three teenagers.

As a dynamic team of two, Valerie has found an equally incredible partner to support all things Development in James (he/they), our new Development Coordinator.

Their expertise is a great pairing: Valerie brings two decades of community development experience (including working with the Oregon Microenterprise Network, Community Vision, Northwest Outward Bound School, and All Hands Raised, as well as serving on the board of Livelihood Northwest), and James brings a depth of data expertise honed over five years of organizing and fundraising work.

Above all, Valerie and James share a fundamental passion for bringing people together to build genuine relationships—embodying our vision in all they do.

With their heart and your help, it feels almost inevitable that together, we can build a Portland where we all belong.
