Our most-revered research study and how it guides our programming

Around the office, The Belonging Barometer is our most highlighted and dog-eared reference article. And for good reason! It’s a groundbreaking study that assesses the benefits of belonging to a wide range of communities throughout America and outlines the essential building blocks. That’s why it’s the foundation of Neighborhood Program’s theory of change that guides how we build, run, and assess our programming.

If you only read one part of the study, dive into the charts on pages 14-22 that illustrate the benefits of belonging.

The three components of belonging

The study outlines three necessary components to experience belonging:

  1. Social Connection
  2. Psychological Safety
  3. A Sense of Agency

We ensure every class, gathering, and event is grounded in one or more of these domains.

Social Connectivity
The social connection you need or want
Psychological Safety
Individual’s perception of acceptance, inclusion, and support within an environment
Agency & Co-Creation
The ability to co-create
the organizations, systems, and structures that shape one’s future, if desired
