A letter to you from our member, Peggy

"This is America - everybody wants to work hard to take care of themselves, and then life is good. Unfortunately, that's not always the way it goes.”

Dear Maybelle Donors,

I started with Maybelle Center when I lived in the apartment complex in Old Town. I was going through a real rough time with my PTSD and depression. And I’ll be honest – I was fighting suicide from the loneliness, the loss of everything, and being ill – just a myriad of things.

Asking for help is extremely difficult for me, especially back then. And Maybelle Center kind of took me into the fold.

I started with activities and getting to know other people again who were intelligent, had a lot to offer, and had different stories and backgrounds – everybody kind of helped everybody.

The two Maybelle volunteers that visited me were really good about noticing if I started to go downhill.

If I was sitting in my room just crying my eyes out, they were like, "Well, what's going on?"

When I got to the point where I couldn’t 100% care for myself, I knew I needed assisted living. It was a difficult decision – to basically give up all of my decision-making processes, or at least a lot of them – to get the help I desperately needed.

Since moving into Macdonald Residence assisted living, I’ve become a lot healthier.

I haven’t had any large seizures, and some of my other health issues have improved. I see improvement in other people as well.

They’re always giving me a purpose here – the staff are really good about that. “Peggy, could you do this?” or “Could you do that?”

I think donating to Maybelle Center is a worthwhile endeavor because you’re giving people a ‘hand up,’ not a ‘hand out.’

Old Town is a difficult community to live in, and Maybelle Center works with people in this community. The donations are greatly appreciated – whether they’re financial, time that’s given, or supplies.

Sincerely,

Signature in blue ink that reads, 'Peggy'
